New Humanities Residential College

The new Humanities Residential College in partnership with the Office of Residential Life provides UCLA students with the opportunity to combine their interests in an academic field in the Humanities with their residential life on campus.

The Humanities Residential College is not restricted to Humanities majors, or even prospective majors; it is sufficient that you are interested in the study and appreciation of a Humanities field -- language, literature, culture, ancient civilizations, or the history of the arts or music -- and are willing to participate outside the traditional classroom setting with other students who share your interests.

In the Humanities Residential College, students with interests in specific fields of humanistic study live together in residential suites and participate in specially designed programs sponsored by academic departments in the Humanities.  Each suite has two bedrooms (doubles or triples), a private bathroom, and a living room.

The suites devoted to a specific academic field comprise a "House"; several of the Houses are devoted to a specific language (Chinese, French, German, and Russian), while other Houses involve the study of literature, art, music, the study of the classical world of Ancient Greece and Rome, or digital humanities.

Each House is partnered with an academic department in the Division of Humanities. House residents are eligible to participate in programs on campus sponsored by the department; these programs may include seminars or sections of lower division classes, talks by professors, graduate students, or visiting speakers, off-campus cultural events or trips to museums, restaurants, or concerts with other residents, and so on.

Residents of the language-themed Houses will be either studying the language of the House, or will have some degree of fluency in the language from previous study or speaking the language at home. Residents in the language-themed Houses are encouraged to practice speaking the House language to each other whenever possible, to complement and reinforce classroom learning.
